Lot of young soldiers who don't really want to fight doesn't make for a great army. Plus Ukrainians are fighting for their lives and homeland

It's worth remembering that they sent conscripted children using old ass soviet equipment into a country with no plan. I'm glad Ukraine is doing well, but Russia still has about 900,000 active duty personnel and 2,000,000 reservists not deployed in Ukraine and the vast majority of their air, sea, and kinetic capabilities haven't been deployed either. It would be stupid or suicidal to pretend that this extremely poorly planned out invasion accurately reflects Russia's overall military readiness.

How much of the military are they using on this. If its only like 2% and ukraine is using 100% that is really explainable.

I think they are thrilled that we don't have to use our resources to deplete their joke of an army.

Plus it's a European conflict far from American soil.

I bet the warhawks in Biden's administration are happier than a pig in shit.

There are between 100 and 200k russian soldiers in Ukraine. Russia has a million active personnel and 2 million reservists in total. So about 15% of their armed forces in total against 100% of Ukraine's forces.

In comparison, Ukraine's total army is about 170k with 100k reservists.

EDIT: Those numbers also don't reflect mercenary groups which Russia has historically relied on as well. For example, supposedly Syrian soldiers are being recruited to fight in Kyiv because they have more experience in urban warfare, but it's unclear how many that might be.

I figured they didn't send their best troops and equipment because they thought Ukraine would fall easily.

Or maybe it's like how Santa Anna sent in his slackers first against the Alamo to deplete the defenders of resources before sending in his main troops.

I think the soldiers themselves were sold a lie and disillusioned. Though they could be the slackers of the bunch. Who's to say?

Go spend some time reading up on the Soviet/Afghan war. What we are seeing here is that the modern Russian army at it's core is no different than the old Red Army.

Don't confuse the Russian soldiers in Ukraine running low on supplies with Russia running low on supplies.

The Russian Air Force has almost 4000 jets. Maybe 30 have been shot down.

After Georgia and Crimea both went perfectly with the exact same plan and basically no geopolitical repercussions maybe he just overplayed his hand.

Either way I'm just saying don't underestimate your enemy.

Sure, but having several planes in east asia, a bunch in Kaliningrad or the Turkmenistan border is gonna do jack shit for them right now

Or maybe Russia sent in expendable people and resources first to weaken Ukraine before sending in more.

For all this talk of botching it, Russia is still advancing, and they have yet to unleash their full military might.

People need to stop underestimating them. Too much propaganda going around.

Nah, the Soviets would be doing much better. Russian corruption really did a number on their forces.

Except they sent in the VDV and RNI which are the best Russia has and they got their ass kicked.

To be clear I wasn't implying above that this is some 4D chess maneuver in ukraine. I'm implying that Putin gambled once again on the world doing nothing and it backfired horribly. I just don't think people should be acting like Russia's military is in shambles because they've lost like 5% of their overall military assets.
