Eh, this particular character's reason was at least established well ahead of time and fits his personality as well as that of his friends. There are other times where it's way sillier. Yumichika not using his kido type true shikai because his pals are meatheads who'd give him shit for it makes sense.

Meh, I know that is simply how kubo wrote his characters but reasons like "my friends will make fun of me for having a better soul slayer than them" is just....so damn dumb. There is really know way to write that and have the reader be all like "yeah, that makes sense". Its like captain dog bro said to ol' 3rd seat chrome dome, the moment you start endangering the lives of your allies or yourself (can't example defend what is most important if you are dead. Its one thing if one dies because they simply weren't better than their opponent, but if they are worrying about hiding their true power for whatever petty reason and end up dying....well, then one is just a dumbass, lol) is the moment you should let go if that kind of silly bullshit and get the job done.

Honestly, captain komamura had to be the most self-aware and extremely competent captain in the series with his kind of personality. That is why he couldn't have the most super awesome maximum zanpakuto lol....if this dude had like, the captain commander's bankai he would have dealt with all their problems in like a week or something.
