I think One Piece fans know this, but we sort of just enjoy the inherent whackiness of the show, and the unexpected is never in the result - it's in how it plays out.

I never have any doubt that we're going to free another island from tyranny, but what I don't expect is to meet an ice cold gangster dressed as a baby in a diaper and then for that goofiness to actually have a poignant backstory to it. I actually can't think of any anime that does this this well, this consistently. Somehow Oda keeps people guessing.

Of course it does drag on though, like any shonen.
