Nah. On a conceptual level, I do like to sort of follow the story and developments through secondary exposure--I'll occasionally skim a wiki page or two, maybe hop in on a discussion topic about the latest chapters.

Every time I try to watch or read it, though, I end up quitting right after Alabasta--which isn't what it sounds like. I absolutely love the Alabasta arc. Crocodile is an amazing villain. But it's long, it's grueling, it's detailed, it's intense, it's creative--and its finale is awesome. Which is a mixed bag of great and awful things.

The big thing is, when the arc is over, it's over, and then we move on to another location, only to start the whole process over again. I don't have the stamina to put up with arc after arc of formulaic buildup into a climax where the heroes win and the island is freed from tyranny. It all plays out relatively the same--the details are different, but let's be honest.

Reach new island -> Meet locals -> Find out the island is ruled by a corrupt/evil government/dictator -> spend the next 50 episodes introducing side characters, having sob story flashbacks, and building up to a final battle with the bad guy -> Win -> Repeat

I acknowledge that some of the arcs play out differently, but...most of them are just...that.

Word for word what I feel. I have deep respect for someone who's made a worldwide following using Looney Toons proportions for characters, but the actual Things Happening just don't engage.

Really, the differences between One Piece and Bleach are separated by some thin margins.

I think One Piece fans know this, but we sort of just enjoy the inherent whackiness of the show, and the unexpected is never in the result - it's in how it plays out.

I never have any doubt that we're going to free another island from tyranny, but what I don't expect is to meet an ice cold gangster dressed as a baby in a diaper and then for that goofiness to actually have a poignant backstory to it. I actually can't think of any anime that does this this well, this consistently. Somehow Oda keeps people guessing.

Of course it does drag on though, like any shonen.

Yeah. I was instantly hooked and it quickly became my favorite manga. Still remember the exact anime amv it was that got me to check out the series.....it was a luffy vs usopp amv set to linkin park's in the end of fucking course, lmfao. (seriously, in the mid 2000s every single action anime had a amv with a linkin park song attached to it, vast majority of the time it was in the end). At this point the only knowledge I had of one piece was via the butchered 4Kids dub and the occasional game release on gamecube that 4Kids was still over. After coming across said luffy vs usopp amv, that led me to see other unedited scenes on youtube like usopp getting wrecked by the 4 ton bat from mr. 4 and luffy's fight with arlong. Ol' kaizuko fansubs was fansubbing right from episode 1 to go through all the 4Kids stuff so that is how I went about catching up.

I got into the series back when the anime was first covering the water 7 arc and the manga version was slightly ahead at the enies lobby fights, so by the time I actually got through all of the kaizuko fansub's episode 1 through like 209 or so other fansubbers was covering the water 7 arc and I just swapped over. (When I first got into it chopper's monster point transformation was the biggest "holy shit wtf" spoiler there was for the series. Slightly before the gear 3rd reveal).

I started binging the anime about ten years ago when I was off work for a week due to medical reasons, and I've been hooked ever since.

Still mad that Bartolomeo didn't join the crew as an actual Straw Hat. I would have loved to see him give up his captain position to become a cabin boy or something just due to him being an utterly hopeless fanboy.
