It's the current that's dangerous, not the voltage. Just shuffling your feet over a carpet and touching a doorknob or your sibling can generate over 35,000 volts.

ESD is the technical term for those static shocks, and most measuring systems cap out at 8kV. You do not generate that much voltage from just shuffling around.
