The thing is, Windows 8 era comp most likely lack a native support for the new AV1 or even the old VP9 codec. Unfortunately Youtube might decide to use those for high resolution video (say, higher than 1080p) and ditch the ancient, potato-compatible AVC codec alltogether. Without native support, decoding will tax your CPU and RAM. To check the codec used by particular video, click gear icon then "Stats for nerds".
