Check your task manager and delete the crap you don't need, the ones using up useless RAM.

Edit: yeah I didn't consider post #2.

I have ad blocker and pop up blocker extensions for Google chrome enabled at the moment but the issue randomly started a few days ago

How many tabs do you have open at once?
Even a shitty 2GB craptop should be able to browse youtube without much problem.

at first it was a few taps open but even with YouTube as the only tab open on chrome it takes several minutes to be able to skip to the upcoming video

now that I think about it, the computer does do everything else at normal speeds. No lag playing games either.

but then say I watch a YouTube video, if I click pause on the video there is like a 3 minute lag until it pauses o.O

Firefox should use lower ram on average but Edge uses the least. If none of these work then you just need a better computer tbh

I had a similar problem with Microsoft Edge where it would just lag the fuck out trying to scroll through YouTube videos. An update later fixed it. You could always try deleting Chrome and reinstalling.

Close the billion tabs youve got open?

I thought that was it at first but then after closing all the manga tabs and restarting the computer and doing all kinds of scans/etc YouTube was the only tab open & still lagged

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I had to double check but it says that chrome is up to date

idk anything about chrome, have you tried looking into the settings and search for some option where you can clear cookies/cache and see if that helps? maybe you have an extension that conflicts with youtube somehow lol?

Windows 8? What's your GPU?

The thing is, Windows 8 era comp most likely lack a native support for the new AV1 or even the old VP9 codec. Unfortunately Youtube might decide to use those for high resolution video (say, higher than 1080p) and ditch the ancient, potato-compatible AVC codec alltogether. Without native support, decoding will tax your CPU and RAM.

To check the codec used by particular video, click gear icon then "Stats for nerds".

You can try to force Youtube to give you the old AVC video and see if it resolves your issue. Just set the video resolution to 1080p or lower.

Im not sure of my gpu but since it might actually be that, I probably should start looking for a new computer lol
