Topic	Is it time to do away with 2 week notices?

In your contracts if employment, is it stated that you're to give notice of you're looking to leave, but your employer isn't obligated to do so if they're firing you? And I don't mean getting fired because of gross misconduct or something like that. And is that typical across all sectors and all levels of seniority? Most the time layoffs happen the people get a severance package, their job is gone but they still get a few weeks or more of paychecks.
