The Twitter crowd can totally fuck off with this bs. If a car accident were to happen, it'd probably happen too fast to do anything about it, and it'd very likely hit both of you anyway, and even if a man were to take preventive action in the heat of the moment, it's actually better for the man to walk on the 'inner' side of the pavement, where he has a better vantage point on the road. The man walking closest to the roadside is not going to help anything, nor should whether a man does it or not be taken into account in any form of etiquette.

If anyone were to ever bring it up (I utterly refuse to believe anyone actually makes a big deal out of this irl), I would just stick to the inner side of the pavement, just to rub it in their face. If that's reason enough for them to call it quits, good.

I call upon men, women and otherwise everywhere to not take this disingenuous pavement walk crap seriously, and to instead either ignore it or openly mock it. We should not allow for enough people to be fooled by this to the point that it becomes the status quo, like some people actually believing that the ok-sign is racist somehow (which it isn't).
