of the next 3d mario game. I haven't even heard "rumors."

I used to want, and believe in SMO2, but direct sequels in the 3D Mario series have a relatively quick turnaround with SMG-SMG2 and 3D Land - 3D World not being too massive of gaps. Now I think SMO2 is unlikely despite it being the top-selling 3D Mario of all time. In all honesty, I speedran that game so much, that I want a new experience entirely at this point anyways (not that I'd be disappointed with a sequel of course).

Additionally, it almost would seem strange to release a huge 3D Mario game this late in the Switch's lifespan as it feels like they might as well save it for the next console, but I guess you could say the same thing about BotW2 and that's coming out next year when the Switch is over 6 years old.

I know this may be "boring" but I'd like a fully-explorable, one-map Mushroom Kingdom/Koopa Kingdom, no loading whatsoever. And when I say Mushroom Kingdom, I mean the colorful kingdom in the 2d Mario games that SM64 failed to recreate and set the standard of plain grass. Imagine an open-world adventure platformer with the Mario hills, happy clouds, and all.
