I am pretty confident that they can do no wrong as far as 3D Mario is concerned. I've never played 3D Land and I know that one has some mixed reception, but it's unfair to compare a game stuck on the 3DS to ones that are on actual consoles anyway.

Odyssey 2 would be great for two major reasons I think. One is that Odyssey is the absolute pinnacle of Mario's movement abilities. It is by far the most fluid feeling 3D Mario game. Whatever the next game is, it needs to build off of that first and foremost. The other is that Cappy is an excellent mechanic that gives you near endless possibilities. The Mario universe has so many enemies that could be potential captures. There are lot of creative things they could do.
