Personally I think it lands just on the right side of clever, and the book wouldn't have half its personality without it. The art also plays well with the fact that TDKR is both a deconstruction of numerous comic tropes and a parody of media influence / oversaturation at the time, back before such a thing became trite. By comparison, the artstyle in Batman: Year One is considerably 'better,' but it's also less exuberant in personality.
