| Raetsel_Lapin 12/17/22 2:01:26 PM #250: | Running very far behind for reasons I don't wish to get into, but here's four songs to start with. Hopefully we'll get through 10: ============================ #548: Grimes, Janelle Monae - Venus Fly (3:45): https://open.spotify.com/track/1QxbBB80IuPwhwW1ygGfPh?si=0af2f6de806747cf Nominator: Player_0 [19/33 Remaining] Initial Score: 24.00 Revised Score: 72.22 Final Score: 58.116 (First Reaction: The constant BOOM-BOOM-BOOMBOOMBOOM throughout everything except the intro is massively off-putting to me and I found this rather difficult to get through. The choruses are nice and I kinda like it when it gets to the violin & quiets down considerably, but then the song goes back to BOOMing almost immediately. I wouldn't say I hate it because there are some aspects to it that I like, but it's a real low point for the album.) Well, I'm in a really good mood and love everything right now. I wonder if I should take the night off because this is really going to disrupt the scoring system if I leave it unchecked... but I suppose I'll push ahead for a bit anyway. The only thing holding this song back at the moment are the booms. I'm still not a fan of them? I'm too... bouncy at the moment to really dislike anything, but I find them rather distracting and they keep me from focusing on all the parts that I enjoy. I love the part with the violins, even if it's far too brief. *some things come up in real life, requiring a break from typing anything for an hour or so* My fault for trying to do this during a busy week, I suppose. Either way, I can't recall enough of the song to make continuing this writeup a valid option, so I'm afraid we'll have to leave things here for the time being. [Final Thoughts: Yeah, I'm back to bouncing off of this song fairly hard this afternoon... I think I'll keep it near the top of the "kinda like" tier because I know part of me REALLY likes this song, but I can't access that side of my personality right now.... I also feel like I should comment on Janelle appearing on the track because I really should listen to more of her work, but I don't have much reaction to her on this particular track.] ============================ -don't leave Chugs at home- ============================ #547: POLICA - Wedding (3:26): https://open.spotify.com/track/1YtCuGcJXut87bPrWNlUZL?si=fD_tPSANSkCn06r3e3LbXA Nominator: Jesse Custer [24/29 Remaining] Initial Score: 54.60 Revised Score: 58.20 Final Score: 58.20 (First Reaction: I could always use more anti-police brutality songs, but I'm not super into this one. It also falls into the trap of just repeating itself once it runs out of words.) Honestly, I'm tempted to give this song infinity points because [REDACTED]. I can't quite convince myself to actually do so though... it's a great concept for a song and I'll always pop for songs with this type of message, but I'm not 100% sold on the music itself. In a way, it almost feels too pretty to act as a protest song? It's not tragic enough to properly highlight the travesties of justice, nor angry enough to feel especially cathartic, or even particularly well suited to play at a protest. I appreciate the sentiment, I love the sentiment, I want this to win for the bold statement it would make, but I feel this song doesn't have enough "bite" to it. I will say I like her voice well enough and have no real complaints about the music itself (apart from it repeating one too many times at the end) and it is pretty, I just don't know that this track is the best way of delivering the message. [Final Thoughts: Really tempted to move this up a tier for the statement it would make, but I suppose I'm honestly not *that* into the song itself... I mean, I do kinda like it and love the message, but it's not exactly a song I'm dying to hear on constant repeat or anything. It's still a damn fine nomination though.] ============================ -what?- =================== #546: Rayman - Oh no! [0:05]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GmV_0K10ro Nominator: paulg [30/52 Remaining] Initial Score: 54.11 Revised Score: 54.11 Final Score: 58.2069 (First Reaction: Funnier losing sound effect than The Price is Right horn, but still not something I'd want to give a bunch of points to.) Not as iconic as The Price is Right's horn, but I'm still going to give "Oh no!" a slight edge in terms of scoring because I personally prefer it. Still, not an awful lot here to comment on and I haven't spent much time playing any of the Rayman series, so there's no nostalgia bonus or random stories I can fill time with. [Final Thoughts: It's a funny sound effect, but there's still not much to say about it.] =================== -is it irony to nominate a song named "Journey to the Past" when another version of Journey to the Past was nominated before making this a musical journey to past ranking topics??- ============================ #545: Christy Altomare - Journey to the Past (3:16): https://open.spotify.com/track/1T0OMgJ1bSqlMDD8cWbvnL?si=dda7b5169e9d40d5 Nominator: CPU [17/30 Remaining] Initial Score: 52.01 Revised Score: 72.15 Final Score: 58.26 (First Reaction: There is no longer a video of a cute dog, 0/100. ...alright, fine, I'll try an actual writeup. It is interesting bringing a Broadway version of a song from last year (or was it two years ago? I didn't have a sense of time to begin with and it's only getting worse lately), but I think I like the film version better? Or perhaps I'm still biased because the film version had a dog & the advantage of being the first version of the song I heard, leaving this as a canine-less retread. ......alright, fine, I'll try to stop being overly harsh. It's a fine performance and I can't complain about her singing, and the lyrics are as good as they ever were; it just doesn't do a lot to really stand out as a unique experience compared to the original and there's nothing to distract me from the feeling that I've already been here. It's good, just not something I'm really looking for at the moment.) Going back and directly comparing the two versions of the song, I think this one probably is better in retrospect. At least, the audio is much clearer and crisp, which could just be creating the illusion of Christy Altomare being a stronger singer than Liz Callaway... but even if that were true (and I'm not saying it is), this *sounds* better which is all that actually matters. Lyrics are simple, but effective. I can be pretty easily manipulated by thoughts of love and family, so it doesn't really take much for a song like this to occasionally hit me pretty hard (depending on current emotional state). I like this song a fair amount; it's still not really new, but it is a worthwhile take on an old song with its own charms. [Final Thoughts: I'm not quite in hte mood for this type of happiness and optimism about finding a home & family right now... it's definitely a track that can hit hard when I'm in the right mood for it, but now's not quite the right time for this song.[ ============================ --- "Toothpaste is real and I hate everything in the world now."-MrCactuar ...
