Alcohol is far worse.

I am a smoker and when I have a cigarette I am still in control of my faculties and I am still fine afterwards but with alcohol (I do not drink) you can lose all that, go into rages way to easily and drink driving is banned everywhere whereas smoking and driving isn't.

I also can't imagine what is worse lung damage or cirrhosis of the liver.

Lung cancer just comes out of nowhere. It's chance. The more you smoke the higher the probability. Cirrhosis of the liver takes a TON of drinking over time. I have a brother in law that's in his mid 40's and he drinks like a case of Bud Light a day. He's a mess but he's not dead. If he drank liquor in the same way he would probably die.

So basically, if you drink a metric fuckton of alcohol you will definitely die. On the other hand, if you smoke like a chimney, you are just increasing the *probability* that you will develop cancer down the line.
