Alcohol because it can cause you to hurt or kill someone else much more easily. You can definitely give someone cancer from second hand smoke, but Im sure that doesnt happen as often as DWI-related fatalities and injuries. You dont smoke so many cigarettes that you freak out and say something embarrassing. You dont lose your temper from tobacco.

I guess cigarettes could accidentally cause fires, but the idiot drunks just takes the lead.

Cigarettes are mostly only dangerous over the long term.

Alcohol can kill someone in a single night, as well as having long term effects.

As an alcoholic.... booze. I'm drunk right now but aware enough to know that shit can kill you quick even over a single night if you fuck up bad enough. Cigs will kill you long term but the affect alcohol has on you and the people that love you is no joke.

Yet I'm still drinking. What does that tell you?

Booze is worse. Although, if you have the self control it won't kill you. Cigarettes will definitely make you die earlier but you aren't a danger to others in the form of violent rage or a DUI. Most of my family members that were heavy smokers died in their 60s or 70s.

I'm drinking an Imperial IPA right now, on a work night. I can go a few days without drinking but then I remember how I forget my troubles when I down 4-5 beers before bed. Yeah I need to work on that. Somehow my Wife quit smoking cold turkey. Smoking since she was 14. That has to be easier than quitting drinking.

Alcohol can literally ruin generations of a family through trauma. Enables violence and reckless behavior that endangers others.

A cigarette smoker stinks and shortens their life.

Alcohol is easier to moderate, while the person that occasionally smokes a cigarette is extremely impressive to me.

I voted alcohol for merely it's potential in damage to people who aren't even drinking it. Though I would tell a singular person to be more avoidant of cigarettes for how easily it will ensnare you.

Mind you I come from a family of alcoholics and am pretty much the only person in the family who hasn't fallen victim to alcoholism at some point.

Alcohol is far worse.

I am a smoker and when I have a cigarette I am still in control of my faculties and I am still fine afterwards but with alcohol (I do not drink) you can lose all that, go into rages way to easily and drink driving is banned everywhere whereas smoking and driving isn't.

I also can't imagine what is worse lung damage or cirrhosis of the liver.

Lung cancer just comes out of nowhere. It's chance. The more you smoke the higher the probability. Cirrhosis of the liver takes a TON of drinking over time. I have a brother in law that's in his mid 40's and he drinks like a case of Bud Light a day. He's a mess but he's not dead. If he drank liquor in the same way he would probably die.

So basically, if you drink a metric fuckton of alcohol you will definitely die. On the other hand, if you smoke like a chimney, you are just increasing the *probability* that you will develop cancer down the line.

Sorry mate but you are wrong.

I take it you have never heard of passive smoking. That is when you breath in the smoke from smokers.

Case in point, In Britain we had an entertainer/actor named Roy Castle, he never smoked in his life but he died of lung cancer because of all the smoke filled pubs and clubs he used to play his trumpet in.

Alcohol and its not even close.

You smoke a pack of cigarettes and you just feel gross.
You drink a 12 pack and you could wind up doing extremely regrettable things. In one of the worst case scenario, killing yourself or others by driving.
Other reasons, but I'm sure you can think of some.

This assumes the person is a piece of shit that blames alchohol for their decisions while drunk.

I am aware that it lowers your inhibitions but choosing to blame alcohol for those decisions is a choice to avoid the responsibility for still making those decisions. So if you're the type of person that allows alcohol to impair your judgment to the point that you make really bad choices and you still drink you're still entirely at fault for drinking in the first place.

I'm surprised cigarettes is beating alcohol in this poll (must be denial.) I think alcohol beats tobacco in terms of the harm it can cause. Unless you're only considering how harmful it is to your own body and second hand smoke. Alcohol is much more dangerous.

Its because drinking is socially acceptable. Birthday party? Lets go to the bar. Youre getting married? Lets make a toast. Etc

I was abusing alcohol pretty hard during the pandemic and it nearly ruined my life. Almost lost my job, girlfriend, and family before I decided to get some help. Ive barely had a drink for the almost a year now and its the best decision Ive ever made.

Ive also been a smoker for about 10 years now (trying to kick this habit too) and I know its horrible for me but its my body my choice. When I go out for a smoke I make sure to stay away from everyone because of second hand smoke. As both a smoker and a former drinker I can 100% say alcohol was way worse for me.

Tough question. Booze can be consumed casually with little health effects. Cigarettes are terrible for you even if you smoke one a day.

However, drinking heavily is worse than smoking heavily as your heart and liver will quit before you will get major issues from smoking.

The final point is as long as your liver isnt completely fucked, if you stop drinking youll start to undo the damage. Damage from smoking doesnt go away, not uncommon for people who quit to still get cancer.

I was drinking heavy for a solid two and a half years 5-6 times a week. And the days I wouldnt drink was because I was too sick to get up and go to the store and buy some more.

How did you deal with my withdrawals because that was the hardest part for me. Weed helped out a lot.

There is some suggestion that a small amount of alcohol use isnt bad for you, and depending on the drink might even be good for you.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/alcohol/art-20044551

Ive never seen anything to suggest that any tobacco use is good for you, though.
