Pokemon Bank launching along with gen 6 and providing a convenient way for a player to have all of their Pokemon in a single place probably gave a lot of players more motivation to finally complete the Pokedex, myself included. I can only speak from personal experience, but gen 6 / the 3DS also happened to coincide with wifi connections becoming much more user-friendly.
