I completed the Pokedex in the original gen 1 games, then didn't bother with it again until I completed the national Pokedex in gen 6. I assembled a full living dex (AKA having one of each Pokemon species in your possession) in Pokemon Home in gen 8, and I have all of the new gen 9 Pokemon in Violet ready for when Home support is added to those games. So I have all 1010 at this point.

EDIT Since I see a lot of people bringing up event-only legendary/mythical Pokemon: If you caught or traded for all of the non-event Pokemon but were only missing Pokemon that were event-only, you can count that as a complete Pokedex for any of the poll options except the last "all 1010" one.

I've finished the regional dex for every gen from 7 onwards.

I've completed the Pokedex in Yellow (sans Mew), Gold (Celebi included), Moon, and Shield (pre-DLC). I'm close to completing it in Violet but there are mainly a couple of Scarlet exclusives holding me back.

Minus event legendaries (because fuck that fucking bullshit in general), I completed the National Dex in gens 3, 4, 5, and 6. Gen 6 was the first time I even used online enough to trade for event legendaries, but I still think I came up a few short.

X was the first and only time I actually tried and got close, but I never did. I think I was only like 50 away too, but it was mainly legendaries and mythicals I needed.

I'm noticing that this seems to be a reoccuring theme. Pokemon Bank launching along with gen 6 and providing a convenient way for a player to have all of their Pokemon in a single place probably gave a lot of players more motivation to finally complete the Pokedex, myself included.

My first Pokmon game was a used copy of Blue & the previous owner completed the dex & had like every fully evolved Pokmon at level 100. Beyond that no

This was definitely part of it. But also in 2013/14 I just happened to have multiple coworkers who also had the game that I could trade with.

What kept me from completing my dex was me quitting that job and never seeing them again lol

Not counting event only Pokmon I got the (706?) Pokmon needed for the national dex in orasxy whatever gen that was.

I think it was 706 needed, my memory sucks.

Completed it in gen 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Very easy to finish when online trading and especially Wonder Trade/Surprise Trade were made. Shiny Charm was introduced in the later gens so that's the goal for most people who finish the dex, easier shiny hunting.

I can only speak from personal experience, but gen 6 / the 3DS also happened to coincide with wifi connections becoming much more user-friendly. I remember constantly struggling even just a few years prior to find a wifi connection that was pure enough for my picky-ass DS to accept (I distinctly remember never once being able to find a suitable connection to download the Lati@s event for HGSS, and I was incredibly miffed about that).

I voted the gen 1/2 option (Let's Go) but then I remembered Arceus.

Nope. Never really tried; I did go as far as getting everything in the regional dex at least seen in one of the DS games, but that's the closest. I rarely bother with completionist stuff nowdays so even if I did pick up a new title (not out of the question but no particular plans to) I likely wouldn't complete the dex.

Violet and more recently Red. Im actually attempting to complete the dex for Crystal now

Yes, in Platinum. Used the GTS to fill most of the holes.
