I'm a little bothered by the sequence of the events though - there is a distinct passage of time between Zack's last stand & the beginning of FF7 in the original timeline, I forget if it's weeks or months I know it was at least one week. (Intergrade spoilers) we see Zack at the church and I'm assuming that follows the events of the "tornado" that takes out the team, which itself is from the end of remake in the Zack timeline? but he surely could've/should've gotten back to Midgar and Aerith's house before that point, before the beginning of FF7? Maybe I'm overthinking things.

Zack dies at the end of September, FF7 starts at the beginning of December, so a little over two months. And even if he survived, he still could have been wounded enough to need to recuperate for a while. Or maybe he was just lying low until the heat died down.
