The multi-disc thing is really weird to me seeing as discs are pretty much just physical DRM for an otherwise digital game at this point. Seems like a weird move to double the cost of disc production just to make the install faster for folks with slow internet.

The trailer looked good, but I am very scared of the implication that this may have a huge open world map. I know that's the obvious direction to go but it will totally undercut my interest.

Discs cost like $.25. It's a tiny fraction of the cost, and why not help folks with slow internet? Also, what does the first part mean? Games have always been digital, back to the NES and previously.

It looked large but not totally open. I think each scene still only had 3 members maximum? So it would still be plot-driven chapter-based.

Surprised they went as deep as Cosmo Canyon for the premiere trailer but I guess if they had that scene already rendered then it's np, all the battle scenes are from environments in what'll be the first few chapters in the game

Also like more direct teasing about parallel worlds/timelines with the way that trailer starts off, oh man. It's really looking like a "Zack Dies" world that we know, and a "Zack Lives" world where the crew sans Cloud gets totally wrecked... and Sephiroth ultimately wins in that world? Assuming that's the world where Jessie and Biggs survive too.

The first part was in reference to how modern physical games still completely install to the harddrive so, once the install is done, you have the same thing as if you'd bought the game digitally except you need a physical "key" to run it.

Granted it's understandable it works this way since actually running from a disc would make load times miserable, but it does kind of highlight how awkward and outmoded physical media is becoming.

Eh, I think it's a little too early to tell. I'm sure there will be sections where you're forced to use certain party members, but I don't know if we can conclude that's how the whole game will be.

Discs these days are mostly used as activation keys. You get a broken game on the disc that is mostly unplayable unless you get the day one patch. Without internet you might as well have bought a paperweight.

It's ridiculous.

YoshiP has been making a big deal about how they have complete confidence in the gold version of FFXVI and they there will not be a patch for release.

It is amazing that that is a thing that needs to be touted as a shocking achievement nowadays.

7R didn't get a patch until it had been out for half a year. Wouldn't be surprised if Rebirth is the same.

I bought the ToV re-release on Xbone and that required a 25GB day one patch. Shit was so infuriating.

Yea I don't remember 7R getting a patch when I played it at launch. Kinda amazing that SE can manage to release games in playable state considering how dysfunctional they are recently. I think Capcom also release games in mostly playable state too.
