Lets spice it up. Im gonna give away a mystery game to someone.

Just pick a category out of these 3 (JRPG, Horror, Tactics), and tell me what is your favorite game out of that genre, and tell me a little about it and why you love it.

The person with the best story will get a game (of my choosing) out of their chosen genre.

Ill pick the winner at around 8pm EST and PM them to get their deets if i dont already have them on my friend list.
Horror for me. Might be a clich pick, but Silent Hill 2 is just special.

Most horror games that I played at that point were good with gross enemies and jump scares, but SH2 was super different. It's not even all that scary (I think 3's the scariest), but I find 2 unnerving. It's the atmosphere, music, odd characters who just all seem off. It isn't so much about spooking you as it is making you feel uncomfortable. I really got into it and felt invested in James' journey.

Silent Hill 2 spoilers below:

Obviously something was wrong and James wasn't going to just find his dead wife alive and well. You do learn what James did, but by that point it doesn't come as a shock. One detail I loved was James' reaction mirrored my own after seeing the tape. He doesn't grab his head and scream "Nooooo!" or anything theatrical. He's just fucking sitting there in a chair in front of a TV man. Totally defeated. Just...damn...

SH2's made up of moments like that which just hit me in the gut every time I see them. Everything to do with Angela, but her final scene where she sorta calls James out asking if he's going to rescue her and take care of her to make everything alright. That's not up to him anyway, but she's just being real about it. She'd be a burden. She's damaged and desperately needs help, but it's just not gonna happen. Not from James. It's too much so she accepts her depressing fate. Damn. Maybe my favorite scene though is Maria behind the bars just fucking with James (and the player). She puts on the obviously fake sweet act, but when James questions it her tone shift when saying "I'm not your Mary." is just so sinister sounding in a subtle way. The lighting in that cutscene is phenomenal. The shadows on her face make her look like a demon.

That game's just different. I can't think of any other games that have THAT specific off putting tone. It's also how it plays like how you get different endings. It doesn't matter if you did some sidequest or picked a stupid morality option. Did you go out of your way to kill monsters? Did you keep yourself healthy? How close did you stay to Maria when you were with her? Did you wait and listen to the entire message from Mary? Mmm. Then my favorite moment ever which is probably totally unique to me was checking the letter just to read it back which I did at several times in the game only to now discover it was a blank piece of paper. I don't even know why that hit me so hard, but I think it was because the game never prompts you to back and check it so just discovering it organically like that made for a real shock. It's a sign of how invested I was in the story.
