It isn't really the water itself, it is the sodium imbalance. That she felt she needed to drink that much to begin with kind of indicates there was already something underlying that caused this.
I remember that being a big thing in basic training that they warned us about. People would drink a bunch of water but would still get sick because they had no sodium left after sweating it all out.
