MONTICELLO, Ind. -- A family in Indiana is issuing a warning about drinking too much water after a 35-year-old mother died of water toxicity during the 4th of July weekend.

Ashley Summers spent the holiday weekend on a lake with her husband and two daughters.

"She loved being on the water, she loved being on the lake," said her brother, Devon Miller. "They were out on a boat all weekend long, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday."

Miller said when he received a call that Tuesday, he knew something wasn't right.

"My sister Holly called me and she was just an absolute wreck," said Miller. "She's like, 'Ashley's in the hospital. She has brain swelling. We don't know what's causing it. They don't know what they can do to get it to go down and it's not looking good.'"

Summers' family said she was feeling dehydrated earlier that day and felt like she couldn't drink enough water. They said she felt lightheaded and had a headache.
"Someone said she drank four bottles of water in that 20 minutes," said Miller. "... Her bottle of water is like 16 ounces, so that was 64 ounces that she drank in the span of 20 minutes. That's half a gallon. That's what you're supposed to drink in a whole day."

This is the first I've heard about it, and the article was posted Monday. Crazy how just 4 16 oz. bottles were enough to kill her. I'm pretty sure I've chugged more than that in less than 30 seconds >_>

Half a gallon of water all at once will not kill you. That's just the amount someone knew about.

Essentially, what would have happened is her sodium levels would have fallen too low because of all that water. You may very well of chugged more, but you also might have had more sodium to begin with, or maybe you also drank a sports drink.

It isn't really the water itself, it is the sodium imbalance. That she felt she needed to drink that much to begin with kind of indicates there was already something underlying that caused this.

Sounds like she had another problem going on. You don't die from water toxicity while simultaneously feeling dehydrated. Sounds like something was fucking with her making her think she was thirsty when she wasn't.

4 bottles in 20 minutes doesn't even seem like that much. I've chugged 2 bottles worth in like 2 minutes before. Maybe theres a threshhold with that much

I remember that being a big thing in basic training that they warned us about. People would drink a bunch of water but would still get sick because they had no sodium left after sweating it all out.

I've heard about people going into comas or dying from drinking too much water in too short a period of time. It's rare though. Dehydration is a much bigger risk if you're in the heat and sweating.

That's crazy. I drink a lot of fluids every day but I'm like always thirsty... Have been that way since I was little.

When I loaded trailers for FedEx I had a 2L Camelback that I filled up 4-5 times a day in the summer... Then again it was usually over 100 degrees in the trailer with a fan that didn't reach the back. That was for a short trailer... Loading a 53 footer was hell.

Yes. I instantly remembered that. That case should be more widely publicized. To prevent future repeats. Everyone needs to know this danger. I think some people still don't know you can drink too much water

There was clearly something else happening and just drinking half a gallon of water in 20 minutes isn't the reason she died.
