im not going to just left hug my wife or kids when I have stuff in my left hand which I usually do since my shoulder injury. Studies like this are dog water.

The goal of studies like this is to estimate what people do in the absence of these types of environmental affordances. You might say "but then it doesn't matter because it's not describing what people actually do in the real world because these factors exist more often than not" but the point is not to describe what people do, but to understand a pattern that might shed light on underlying psychological processes.
