US slightly got away with Trump because it is the largest economy possessing the most powerful military in the world. Allies stuck it out for 4 years in the hope of a return to normality. May not work again, another Trump term may convince the world that the US is no longer a reliable ally. Tories didn't have that kind of throw weight, also too stupid to realise it.
