I don't think the Bible says alcohol is a sin, drunkenness is the sin. Growing up Methodist the church discouraged alcohol in a better safe than sorry sort of way against alcoholism. A pastor of mine actually had issues with my dad drinking but it was because he used it as an excuse to never be home. Even so dad was never excommunicated from the church or refused communion (not that he went much anyway).
In another kind of church you can become persona non grata because you 'backslid'. Alcohol is backsliding. Even pepperoni is.
it's not excommunication but it is really bad and sort of permanent because people talk and these people tell all their friends. It's a form of shunning.
