Game of the decade for me (and Binding of Isaac literally being #2). That said, to your point, yes, it's weird that it got as big as it did. Why do I have a shirt with Meat Boy on it? Why did I buy the spin-off game with Dr. Fetus as its only character? Because they're awesome, I suppose. But still weird.
