By my count right now I'm at 206. I might be missing some but I think this is a complete list, if I do somehow add another, I'll update the list accordingly. If I happen to play any more in the course of posting the list, I'll add those in as well (and that's a real possibility, as I added like 3 new ones in the course of making the list)

As it turns out, defining what an indie game is and isnt is way fucking harder than I realized it'd be

Some things I didn't incude:
  • Games from earlier than 2000, because that's about when indie games as we know them now started to be a thing. Before that it's a clusterfuck with what could potentially count
  • Games made by small studios that are really just made as branded products like movie tie-in games or Nickelodeon crossovers (there is one exception to this on the list)
  • Really any big budget $60 game regardless of who made it
  • Games that I played for <1 hour (unless the game itself is <1 hour long)

Some things I included:
  • Games from studios that were small and later got bought out by bigger studious, assuming the games released felt like indie games
  • Games from independent studios under the ownership of major producers (Sony has a bunch of these) again assuming they seem to fit as indie games
  • Games I played for an hour over a decade ago that I barely remember

tldr: it's all just vibes, there will probably be things I include that you think don't count, and things I excluded that you think should count, but like, I tried

There will writeups with all of these but keep in mind some of these I don't remember more than "yeah I think I played that" so don't expect much written for those

"There aren't many games on this list I'd call bad but these ones are" Tier

206. The Unknown City (Horror Begins Now..Episode 1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHHeDPuVjkU

This is a game I bought for 99 cents on PSN a few years back because the name made me laugh. Maybe its the 5-dot ellipsis or maybe it's how confident they were that there was going to be more episodes. It looks dumb, but for a dollar it seemed like dumb fun. I was not prepared for just how terrible it would be. There is basically not a single aspect of this game that works as intended and the game was so broken that I couldn't finish it, not because I dropped it but because the game wouldn't let me progress

205. Hello Neighbor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eut-ehTyUJs

While technically less broken than The Unknown City, it's not by much. It's also a much bigger waste of money, because I bought this as a disc for like $15. I thought, "hey, this concept seems interesting, and it's got a big following, surely it must be pretty neat". But this is a case of a game being 100% marketing, 0% game development, and is a buggy, borderline unplayable piece of garbage devoid of any real creative spark. But it still got a sequel and spinoffs and an animated series somehow? fucking why

I already remembered one that I forgot to include because it barely counts as a game, so consider the previous two bumped down to 206 and 207

205. Flappy Bird
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQoJZuBwrkU

remember when this came out and suddenly everyone needed to play it even though it was barely a game? There will be a few of those viral "everyone is suddenly playing this" games, and (spoilers?) they'll mostly be in this tier because they're usually not good. Flappy Bird was the least good of the lot though, and is one of the few games to make the list with <1 hour of playtime because there is not 1 hour of game to play here

204. Bounty Battle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2DEtVcSr20

I recommend watching that trailer, because it is much, much better than the actual game. I mean that trailer is high quality and extremely hype for something being made by a pretty small team. The indie crossover fighting game thing has been done a few times, usually with mixed to good success (I didn't play enough of Brawlhalla for it to make this list, and didn't play any Indie Pogo or Fraymakers unfortunately). But I saw the Bounty Battle trailer and immediately followed it all the way up to its release. And then upon release, holy shit. Again, it was almost unplayable. Controls were awkward and inconsistent, the screen was so muddied you couldn't tell who was who, and even friends who were big fans of fighting games were unwilling to play it for more than a match, it was that bad. After it came out, the developers basically said, "yeah, we get the complaints, we'll make it better" and then just kinda ghosted. After how much effort must've gone into collecting licenses and designing everything, I can't imagine letting all that work just fall into the trash the way they did with this.

203. Cookie Clicker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq3GI-fK8fs

This is the one I forgot, and it was Flappy Bird that made me remember. Again, barely qualifies as a game, and is basically a source of addiction with no other value or merit. That being said, I definitely fell prey to it, spending several hours desperately trying to hit the next cookie goal. From this game essentially came idle games, with tons of developers trying to make a quick buck off of a game format that involved very little work and profited off of players' need to achieve arbitrary goals and impatience to do so

202. KIDS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB7u2oyfJPU

This one also falls into the "barely qualifies as a game category". KIDS isn't actually bad in the way many of the others in this tier are, but it's also nothing more than an interactive art piece that's over in 15 minutes. It's not really fun and it's only slightly something I could call interesting.

201. Slender: The Eight Pages
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnvjNcV8kX8

Sort of like Hello Neighbor, Slender was one of those viral horror games that everyone and also Markiplier had to play because it was oh so scary. Also like Hello Neighbor, there's basically nothing here. It uses "minimalism" for fear but with minimalism really just kinda being a code word for barebones game design. At least Hello Neighbor had an original antagonist, Slender didn't even provide that. The horror factor is based entirely on how scary you think Slenderman and an empty, dark forest are. Playing the game is the equivalent of just searching for a needle in hay, then doing that 7 more times, and occasionally starting over from scratch if Slenderman catches you.

Congrats on all the games that made the top 200! The bar was very, very low

But also putting Flappy Bird and Cookie Clicker that low is baffling. Both genius games. Didn't think Cookie Clicker was indie tho.

Also Slenderman, easily the most influential horror game of the past decade. I never played it myself since it looked terrible but you gotta respect the history.

I always had a soft spot for Slender. I think it's genius in its simplicity.

It was super original at the time too, especially as the mainstream horror game franchises were all switching to straight-up action at the same time. For many years it was scarce to get AAA survival horror experiences so indie games like Amnesia and Slender really helped carry the horror torch.

I would personally say either Amnesia or Five Nights at Freddy's are the most influential horror games of the past decade but yeah Slender's definitely up there too. I just think about how now there's so many short horror games like it in the indie space through itch.io / Steam, these short visceral experiences built around atmosphere and jumps - efficient and to the point, no excess. I understand their criticisms but as digestible, in 'n' out horror experiences - they're usually well done from my point of view.

You're not wrong! Slender is definitely super influential, but I have mixed feelings on how good of a thing that is. Then again, I don't play a lot of smaller independent horror games, so my opinion on them is pretty nil.

I got the Amnesia games off PS+ at one point and always planned to play them eventually, but never did

I think as far as horror goes, I've always been more into horror shows/books/movies than games. I think sometimes it's hard for me to balance the excitement of the tension/terror with actually playing it as a game, which is also odd seeing as Bioshock is arguably my favorite game of all time. But that was one that was kinda the full package for me; extremely tense and atmospheric, interesting world building while still being scary, and also very fun to play.

There's a few horror games I really dig (Alan Wake, Bloodborne, and some of the Resident Evils come to mind) but a lot of the times they're games that kind of use horror tropes and themes rather than being straight survival horror

Cookie Clicker at least has a personality all its own-- world-ending crises brought upon by mundane thing is hardly an original slant but the game takes it to such comical extremes. Every time you think it can't push farther, it proves you wrong and robs you blind. Plus the dev's a good sport, and while every other idle game in its footsteps is beefed with microtransactions, Cookie Clicker is indefinitely free!

That said I would never recommend the game to anyone haha. My browser's cookies refreshed at some point this year and with 'em went my cheatless save that I just never backed up. A weight was lifted that day.

200. Threes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgpJUj7GUFQ

Does anyone remember this one also becoming a big viral sensation? It almost feels like I dreamed it, because it doesn't seem like something that would've been nearly as popular as it was. I feel like I've played plenty of other, more interesting versions of this same concept, usually as minigames within other games. This is yet another case of a game I played basically to see what the hype was about, only to not understand the hype. Not a bad game, like it works fine for what it is, but what it is is just so minimal that it's hard to justify putting higher.

199. Interactive Buddy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-MDHYf6IP8

There will only be a few Newgrounds games on this list. I played a bunch as a teen, but my memory of most of them is so fuzzy and distant that there's no way I could accurately choose which all I did and didn't play. I absolutely played a lot of Interactive Buddy though, and looking back it's pretty clear why. It's about as juvenile of a game that exists. Do damage to the faceless (though you can buy faces for things that were relevant around that time like Teletubbies and Napoleon Dynamite) buddy to see him ragdoll around the screen, and the more damage you do, the more new weapons you can buy. It's dumb, but I guess it serves its purpose.

I mean, compared to the super generic copies that followed it in waves, yeah Threes was way better. 2048 I never played largely because I saw it and just thought "this is just Threes again"

That being said, I've still never been a fan of this type of game, where the entire thing is just a single, fairly simple mechanic intended to keep you continuously playing. I've also never cared much for Match 3 games for the same reason

198. Five Nights at Freddys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP4UTOek0-Y

Yep, it's another one of these. FNAF is obviously iconic and influential, but that's not exactly because it's a good game. The gameplay can be summed up as essentially "wait for jump scares to happen, sometimes press a button to prevent them." It's the kind of thing that makes great content for let's players but isn't exactly fun to play. I'll at least give it some credit for putting effort into the lore, even if it's pretty silly at this point

197. Run Sausage Run!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e98DQRfed7w

I bought this for dirt cheap when looking for more multiplayer party games because it was a funny concept. It's super simple and gets kinda boring after like 15 minutes. But it does feature this catchy as hell song (good thing too, because it's literally the only song in the game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-iNxD85kQc

196. Faade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmuLV9eMTkg

Look, I admire the work that went into this game. It does a good bit with very little, and in 2006, way before we could just auto-generate full AI conversations, this felt almost revolutionary. Realistically, there isn't really a whole lot you can do here. There are only a select handful of responses it'll recognize and respond to. At its best it's so awkward it's funny, at its worst it's just uncomfortable and kinda uncanny valley. It's definitely memorable though!

195. We Become What We Behold
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krafldtfTio

basically just KIDS again. I think I ranked this one too high honestly.

194. Goat Simulator
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvWGLcdI8o8

In the early 2010s, we started getting a lot of these types of "simulator" games, where the whole point of the game was to do seemingly simple tasks but with awkward gameplay, often with "simulator" in the name. The quality of these varied pretty drastically (there will be a few on this list) but most of them fell on the lower end, as they usually (in my experience) get boring shortly after the initial goofy concept wears off. For Goat Simulator, that was immediately. Much of the humor is largely based on how funny you consider goats to be (which was peak humor around 2014 for some reason) and the wonky gameplay wasn't just wonky, but felt more frustrating and broken.

193. Racing Bros
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm9AA79FPrE

There aren't many games I could call "so bad they're good." Racing Bros plays terribly, many levels are broken, there's no balance to anything, there's not exactly much there in the way of features or settings or anything. I can't justify not putting it in the "these games are bad" tier. But is it fun? Against all odds, yeah. It costs like $1 and is definitely worth playing for like half an hour with a group of friends. Maybe not more than that. Also, at the end of every single race, it does this:

Really seems like the kind of thing that would go viral in like a Minesweeper kind of way, but nobody I know seems to have played it. Did anyone else play Boom Blox on the Wii? It's kind of like that but worse.

Angry birds? Is that like a Hatoful Boyfriend spinoff?

Doesn't sound familiar. Is that a game adaptation of those plush bird head pillows?

190. Joe Danger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6wCFEj6slg

Joe Danger was fun, I think. There are a lot of these mobile sidescrolling short-level platformer type games, and this is one of them. It's Trials Evolution with more personality and worse mechanics.

189. Surgeon Simulator & Amateur Surgeon

Another one of these simulator-type games, with dark-ish humor, where you try to play surgeon despite barely having the most basic control of your hands. I'm also throwing Amateur Surgeon, the silly Adult Swim surgery game, in here too, since it came out a few years earlier and I'm only just now remembering it exists. They're both funny for like a two or three levels, and then I just feel like doing something else.

188. Dear Esther

I've been a big fan of basically every other game I've played in this genre but Dear Esther bored me to tears and I don't think I ever ended up finishing it. If I did, I don't remember. Pretty island (?) though.
