Getting a real Christmas tree is good for the environment since all those trees growing in tree farms remove a lot of carbon from the atmosphere.

You have to dispose of it properly though. The best way is to turn it into mulch and a lot of cities have recycling programs that will do just that. Another good way is to simply throw it in your backyard or in the woods where it can decompose naturally.

The things not to do are to burn it, since that releases the trapped carbon back into the air, or take it to the landfill because if it's covered up and not getting oxygen as it decomposes it'll produce methane.
