Playing Ritual Beasts put costs into perspective. Sometimes, as long as you can fulfill even a part of the cost or effect as the requirement to do the next thing, it actually goes through. If you target 2 banished cards and return 1 of them, it fulfills the cost, but if you return both of the banished targets to the gy, it no longer fulfills the cost.

If an effect says destroy 2 cards, then do this, I'm fairly sure if only 1 card gets destroyed by the effect, the then ___ clause will go off, but I'm not 100% sure.

Also if you have to negate a monster's effect to use the next effect, if all the available targets are already negated, then that effect in its entirety can't be activated. You can't negate an already negated monster.
