Literally at any sporting event there are tons of people who do not stand for the anthem out of sheer laziness. No one seems to care about that but as soon as some people start doing it to protest racial inequality people can't handle it and the narrative is manufactured that not standing for the anthem is disrespectful which is utter bullshit.

Pretty big difference between not standing out of laziness and kneeling to spite the country. I thought you were a smart enough guy to recognize that difference.

Because apparently serving means that you're magically exempt when it comes to disrespectful displays against the country? As for the highlighted tweet, it was put together by an idiot who thinks that the flag merely stands for the military (which it doesn't) and that a few old, rank&file soldiers somehow represent the entire military (which they do not and cannot).

Traditions are funny things. It's sorta like putting your hand over your heart during the pledge of allegiance, or standing during the Hallelujah Chorus, or taking off a hat during prayer. People find weird ways to show respect, so when you go against the action, people can't help perceive a lack of respect on your part.

Given that the motive is rather explicitly to show disrespect to the nation over the function of a small portion of its local government, it's not merely a harmless "I didn't mean to disrespect" as it is a giant "fuck you" to the system.

But the reality is, respect is something you have to EARN. If someone doesn't respect you, that's not a flaw on them, it's a flaw in your ability to earn said respect.

Considering that the country has gone well and above to earn that respect, it's truly the fault of the citizens. While I criticize many of the government's policies, I've never been inclined to bash the country as a whole because I recognize how lucky I am to live in a nation which celebrates a wide array of freedoms and is governed by the people in generally fair elections, shit that isn't true across most of the rest of the world.
