This is really true, and...actually you can make quite alot from it.

I know one guy who does this and makes about $800 a month. In theory you could make even more (since many places also offer a $100 referral bonus as well per person).

I've donated my blood a bunch, but never plasma, but yeah, people do this for extra money all over the place. Pretty crazy I never heard of this before recently.

Buying anyting low and selling high is also always a good way to make money as well. Even just random crap on let it go etc, but stuff with a decent value that is selling for nothing, then resell it for a decent amount.

An example would be magic the gathering cards. I bought a box full of them from craigslist for $60 (seller wanted $100 originally, I talked him down). Went through the 4000+ cards and there was at least 60 of them worth $2 or more, and a good 300+ worth between 50 cents and $2. Great deal, and even selling on TCG etc you could easily over tripple your money (While still having tons of decent but not expensive cards).

Always tons of deal like that ifyou look for em. Could easily make over $1k a month just buying and selling if you worked it (but that might be too much like work for you).
