Yes No View Results 41 y/o Robert Pattison, a trainee firefighter was FIRED on his FIRST DAY on his new job after he brought an enormous WATERMELON as a "gift" to his new black colleagues... He brought the fruit with a pink bow to a "meet and greet" in Detroit where he was assigned.. Several African American Firefighters complained about the incident and the station bosses kicked him to the curb for "unsatisfactory work behaviour" Chief Shawn McCarty said the gift was not mandatory but a tradition among new firefighters. Robert brought this watermelon despite knowing that his new colleagues would be 95% black..He did not want to go on camera but said it was not intended to be a joke but didn't mean to offend anyone either Shawn didn't think he should have been fired but the decision was not his. Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said "There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behaviour inside the Detroit Fire Department". They releaesd a statement that said that a trial firefighter who was on probation was let go for unsatisfactory work behaviour and deemend offensive and racially offensive and the best course of action was to terminate his employment as a probationary employee.
