There's always that one guy, isn't there. People are either ignorant on history or just being willfully ignorant.

It's really one of those things that people try to build up as offensive. Watermelon is generally a big thing among southerners and, honestly, people in general. It's like that Chapelle bit on fried chicken: Yeah, it's a black stereotype, but a lot of black people like it... as do tons of white people. At a certain point, there are some things you have to write off as being racist which we, as a society, have failed to do and thus exacerbated a lot of the problem.

However, for something really offensive, you may want to check out the "Eat that Watermelon" rap starring Affion Crockett Feat Nick Cannon. I'd link directly to it but, between the blackface and racial stereotyping (even though it's blacks doing it), I reckon the mods wouldn't take too kindly to it.
