I love that his explanation was that he mistakenly thought his firearm was a taser. I mean that is like mistakenly eating a pizza and assuming its a sandwich before you eat it.

They actually have a video of him yelling taser and then saying sorry.

I believe it because asshole cops never say sorry. I've never heard of an asshole cop apologize. Plus he looks senile.

Yeah, not for one second did I ever assume it was anything but an honest -- and stupid -- mistake given that he had no real training or business being there.

aren't police tazers shaped similar to a gun nowdays? either way still sounds like a mistake a professional shouldn't be making.

Keyword being "professional"

also 76 years old? sorry there needs to be a cut off for doing field work, retire or get shuffled behind a desk. too many things can go wrong at that age, and you may not know the problem is there until its already caused you to make a huge mistake.

...because he wasn't really a cop. He was a reserve deputy -- an unpaid volunteer -- who got the status by donating heavily by the department. He had no business being out there, which is why the sheriff was indicted.

It's kinda important to keep in mind that sheriffs and deputies *aren't* quite the same thing as normal police officers. Sheriff is an elected office and they're kinda allowed to deputize who they want. Some deputies are paid, full-time positions like normal cops. However, sheriffs can also deputize normal citizens to act as LEOs. Near as I understand the process, anyway.
