Do you think this jerk should have served his full 4 years despite "good behaviour"?

76 y/o Robert Bates, a white former Oklahoma reserve deputy and insurance salesman who fatally shot and killed an unarmed black man after mistaking his FIREARM for a TASER has been released EARLY from prison after serving less than HALF of his 4 year sentence!!

Dept of Corrections spokesman Matt Elliot said he was freed for "good behaviour" and will be on probation for 9 months.

He was found guilty of second degree manslaughter after the shocking video showed the botched arrest in April 2015.

44 y/o Eric Harris was killed after the video showed Robert trying to arrest him but took out his gun to shoot him instead of a taser..he claimed he thought it was his taser at the time.

Robert only served 16 months of his prison sentence as the shooting drew thousands of residents to petition a grand jury to investigat the MILLIONAIRE retired insurance executive who was unqualified to serve as deputy but ekpt on the force because of his close ties to the indicted ex-Sheriff Stanley Glanz.

The family of Eric Harris said the early release is a slap in the face as he is released early in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas while they mourn the loss of a loved one.

Robert was taking part in an undercover gun sale sting operation when he confronted Eric and after he ran for it, Robert was shown giving chase and in an attempt to subdue him, he grabbed his gun and pulled the trigger instead of the taser..

In the video, Bates can be heard shoutign "Taser, Taser!" and when it goes off, he says "I shot him! i'm sorry"

Eric can then be heard yelling 'Oh my god, he shot me! He shot me! he shot me man! Oh my god, i'm losing my breath!"

Robert resigned following the shooting and was found guilty of manslaughter in May 2016 to begin his 4 year sentence

The Colonel Sanders lookalike was then seen walking out of Prison at 6:45am this morning as a free man..

Do you think he should have served his full 4 years despite his "good behaviour"?

I love that his explanation was that he mistakenly thought his firearm was a taser. I mean that is like mistakenly eating a pizza and assuming its a sandwich before you eat it.

They actually have a video of him yelling taser and then saying sorry.

I believe it because asshole cops never say sorry. I've never heard of an asshole cop apologize. Plus he looks senile.

aren't police tazers shaped similar to a gun nowdays? either way still sounds like a mistake a professional shouldn't be making.

That seems to be the scandal going on. Cops buddying up and being unprofessional.

also 76 years old? sorry there needs to be a cut off for doing field work, retire or get shuffled behind a desk. too many things can go wrong at that age, and you may not know the problem is there until its already caused you to make a huge mistake.

Yeah, not for one second did I ever assume it was anything but an honest -- and stupid -- mistake given that he had no real training or business being there.

...because he wasn't really a cop. He was a reserve deputy -- an unpaid volunteer -- who got the status by donating heavily by the department. He had no business being out there, which is why the sheriff was indicted.

It's kinda important to keep in mind that sheriffs and deputies *aren't* quite the same thing as normal police officers. Sheriff is an elected office and they're kinda allowed to deputize who they want. Some deputies are paid, full-time positions like normal cops. However, sheriffs can also deputize normal citizens to act as LEOs. Near as I understand the process, anyway.

So what was the guy who got shot doing to find himself in this situation? If "committing a crime" is the answer, I don't see what the big deal is.

It's not appropriate to shoot all criminals, particularly negligently.

No one ever mentions the "victims" record. Guy was a rapist, a thief, and violent.

You don't accidentally anybody to death though. If he intended to shoot then he may have been better off but he negligently killed him, so anybody could've been at risk over the course of his career.

I think everyone should have to serve their full sentences except in certain situations. This is not one of those situations. However, maybe don't commit crimes and then resist arrest? He'd still be alive and this old shit would've never tried to taser him.

I still don't think a 76 year old should be handed a gun and expected to possibly use it as part of his job. volunteer or not. what if hes been developing a case of dementia and no one has caught it yet?
