they're being taught fractions in grade fucking 6? what the fuck

Yeah, I remember learning fractions like in 1st or 2nd grade. They really should know them at that age. My class was doing really basic algebra by 6th grade iirc.

No we are actually learning about ratio and percents. They have them converting between decimals, percents, and fractions. To write a percent as a fraction you simply just put the number over 100. They do that but they don't recognize that most of the time it can be simplified.

For example we wrote 16% as a fraction yesterday. I had some people leave it as 16/100 and some write 8/50. Very few wrote 4/25. It's fucking frustrating. We spent a lot of time on the last unit on finding the GCF of 2 numbers.

Ah I see. Not really sure of a way to teach anyone to be able to easily tell when one can be simplified. I don't know if this is good advice, but one way that did help me when learning them was that I noticed if the numerator and denominator are both even numbers, the fraction can always be simplified, afaik. Doesn't help every time of course, but it did a lot of times for me. Good luck with that though man, teaching kids looks like it can be rough.
