It's an important skill. Most of my honors can do it no problem.

For example 75/100 also equals 3/4. They have no idea how to get to 3/4. Ultimately the problem is they don't know their fucking multiplication facts. It's not my job to teach that though.

You don't understand how teaching works and the expectations on teachers. I have many standards to cover for their end of year test.. I'll do my best to review with them whenever I can but at this point they got to know their multiplication facts better.

I'm evaluated based on the scores they get and they are placed in classes based off their scores. I love the kids and I want them do well and that means at some point we have to move on to other topics. Simplifying fractions will come up again and again throughout the year so they still have time to pick the skill up.

No we are actually learning about ratio and percents. They have them converting between decimals, percents, and fractions. To write a percent as a fraction you simply just put the number over 100. They do that but they don't recognize that most of the time it can be simplified.

For example we wrote 16% as a fraction yesterday. I had some people leave it as 16/100 and some write 8/50. Very few wrote 4/25. It's fucking frustrating. We spent a lot of time on the last unit on finding the GCF of 2 numbers.

Ah I see. Not really sure of a way to teach anyone to be able to easily tell when one can be simplified. I don't know if this is good advice, but one way that did help me when learning them was that I noticed if the numerator and denominator are both even numbers, the fraction can always be simplified, afaik. Doesn't help every time of course, but it did a lot of times for me. Good luck with that though man, teaching kids looks like it can be rough.

Yeah 6th grade math is low level. I chose to teach it because I am very young looking. I'm certified to teach 6-12 math though.

But yeah the math itself anyone could do. Teaching kids no matter what the grade level is challenging.

An interesting thing about 6th grade math is we're not allowed calculators.

Common denominator.

Although honestly, the only way I remember to figure those out is through brute force. Just keep trying different numbers.

Maybe try to make it more applicable to that generation. Put it in terms of YouTube views or some shit.

Either way, it sounds like it would be tricky to do if they don't know how to multiply.

This is a common misunderstanding when it comes to teaching that a lot of people have.

Knowledge != Teaching Ability

Teaching is an entirely separate skill that needs to be acquired (and that not everyone is suited for, regardless of knowledge).

As a teacher, I disagree.

It definitely can be a crushing job, but it doesn't have to be. Too many teachers labour on at poor workplaces under the delusion that it's the same everywhere else. It's not.

You might argue that the positives are beaten out by the negatives, but the positives still exist.

Also, do most people's jobs do them a lot of favours? I've worked in many roles, and feel it's the best job I've ever had.
