In early years, they can't comprehend race, they simply know that people come in all the colours they've seen, they don't think it means anything. Prejudices appear when associations can be made, i.e. all people I've made friends with me have been my colour (because they were family) and a larger proportion of people who didn't like me were different colours (because they weren't family, they weren't compelled to make friends.) If they never experience any differences between races when they're young because everybody acts nicely, then they don't associate colour to any negativity.
