No one suggested it as a joke, it was such a big politial issue that people were fleeing to the far right just because they were the only ones giving the option.

Maybe "as a joke" was a bad way of putting it. But whoever the dude was, Cameron I believe, I think he allowed.the referendum under the belief that there was no way it actually would result in leaving the UK.

Again, just what I've heard, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah.

In the elections the Liberal Democrats and Labour shot themselves in the ass by saying there would be no referendum.

The conservatives said there would be one but leaving the EU is a bad idea.

That alone more than probably anything else bagged the conversatives the election because they instantly won about 10% of so of the population.

Yeah and didn't Cameron resign right afterwards? Really stupid gamble on his part. Kinda like it was a stupid gamble to not take Trump seriously. I guess the equivalent would be the DNC aiding Hillary in the primary because they likely thought the general was in the bag and there was no need to actually put forth the best democratic candidate. A stupid gamble that lost big time. And not just a political loss, but a loss that actually harmed both countries. Can't believe the people we choose to run our governments can be so irresponsible.
