The virus grew in Alex Mercer's dead body. The Alex Mercer we see is just the virus. It took on Alex Mercer's personally because it was the first thing that it consumed. The virus thinks it's Alex Mercer, and for all intents and purposes, it is. Even if it was the real Alex Mercer, he's definitely FAR from human. EDIT: The way I took it, is that Alex Mercer became the prime personality of the virus. When Alex consumes other people, he also gains all their memories, and could just a easily become them. However, since Alex was the first being that the virus had contact with, it adapted him as the prime personality.
