I have actually considered this option (getting rid of medicare). But concluded it was a pretty bad idea. Lots of 30-40 something adults will be willing to spend money to save their parents lives, which is good of them, but the effect would be bankrupting large parts of the middle class. (Specifically the ones who have a big heart and don't want their parents to die in suffering). And then there's the question of what do you do if someone has a heart attack and shows up at a hospital. Do you treat them before seeing their insurance card? If you do, the government is going to end up paying for a whole lot of senior health care anyway through the bankruptcy system, and seniors who can't afford health care can just declare bankruptcy whenever they get a big hospital bill. --- Cats land on their feet.
