Give him point blank shot and the riposte move and he slays.

point blank shot tends to target enemies that have PROT or high HP and low damage

the most important turn in darkest dungeon is the first and he has no moves that can kill a backline enemy before they take theirs

in theory it'd be ok if you were moving a backliner to the front

but in practice doing that takes an action that could instead be spent killing the backliner and another that could be spent killing a different backliner
