You sure do place an awful lot of faith in the rationality of a person who has no qualms about breaking into your house and using force to take your possessions. Criminals are widely renowned for their abilities to assess situations, act rationally and properly consider the pros and cons before acting. That's why they do things like risk years in prison for amounts of money typically under 1 grand.

See highlighted section. Not all thieves are gung-ho on murdering someone for their possessions. They just want to get in, get the stuff and get out as fast as possible, and do it quietly. A gunshot would wake the whole neighborhood and draw unwanted attention to themselves.
