Only if I had to. Guns lead to court and investigations. However, a baseball bat or other blunt weapon is perfectly passable, you won't even be arrested for it.

The problem is, if the person doing the stealing belongs to the correct race of people, then even though your defending yourself, a lot of people think it's wrong.

How acceptable it is to shoot a trespasser is really dependent on the state you're in. As you said, some states will file charges against you even if you shoot a trespasser in self defense.

If you have a gun and you aren't using it, you're putting yourself at risk. I would probably threaten first although, to be fair that does give a potential attacker warning but it heads off potential problems. Even if you legally kill an intruder in your home, you're still going to deal with an investigation not to mention the possibility of personal trauma.

Those are issues *after* the fact. You'd be so keyed up that you'd probably do it purely by instinct. Keep in mind this is a split-second action in regards to an imminent threat, not a premeditated cold-blooded murder where a lot of thought is going into it.

Yeah. But everyone is in a different situation. Not everyone has stuff that can always just be replaced. And what if that something they want is in say, their daughter's or son's room. Most people will do what it take s to keep their family safe.

Their car got a flat tire, and they pulled into the driveway to ask the owners for help. The guy who got shot was sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle. Not exactly a break and enter situation. Did you even read the article?

You'd be stupid to shoot to maim. Any cop will tell you this a lot less hassle if you kill them, and it's not exactly as though you owe a home invader any favors.

No way in hell would I even consider something like this. Can you imagine how terrifying it would be waiting for the cops to arrive? With a thief pilfering around looking for valuables theres a good chance they would find you and you never know where their mind is at or what kind of drugs they might be on. A minute would feel like an hour in that situation and who knows how the intruder would react when the police arrive.

If someone breaks into my home Im assuming the worse. Even if I wasnt armed I would try to club them over the head until they couldnt get up and do any harm. Im not gonna take a chance and put my life or my wifes life into the hands of an unknown criminal.

I am not a trigger happy person.

That said, if someone breaks into my home, it's dark, and I don't know what their intent is-- whether they're armed or not-- I have a gun within arm distance and I will fire if I feel unsafe.

It very well could be. It all depends on the situation. Just because you can't see it ever being safer to shoot someone to protect you family doesn't mean it can't happen. Also, whoever said shootout. That's only one scenario. And not the most likely to happen...

That's probably true that it would be easier to kill. But it may not be as easy mentally or emotionally. But killing is an option if it's what you have to do.

I will never willingly have a gun in my house, so this is a bit of a moot point, but if I ever did.

1. If I could run, I would do that and call the cops.
2. If they were blocking my escape route, but were not visibly armed, I would warn them that I was armed and tell them to leave.
3. I would only shoot if they attacked me or if they were visibly armed.

a) Shooting someone in the arm or leg can very easily be fatal - there's a ton of blood vessels running through both. The action movie trope that you can take a shot to the shoulder or calf and limp on heroically is bullshit.
b) Deliberately shooting someone in the arm or the leg is also damn near impossible with most guns, particularly given how much adrenaline will be flowing at that point. Guns outside of video games do not have magic accuracy and are not point-and-click weapons. There's a reason why standard procedure for shooting at a human is "aim for the centre of mass".
