Yep. Found that out a while back. Still I use electric as most British folk do.

why would i use an electric kettle when i could just boil the water on the stove

... because then you don't need to watch the water boil or even turn the stove on. Fill kettle up with water, flick a switch and go about your business until it's done.

You realize you just said they're equivalent. I don't believe anyone except little kids out of curiosity would watch the water boil. When it starts boiling the kettle makes a very loud noise. So, with a stovetop kettle, you fill up the kettle, flick a switch (ok, turn a knob) and go about your business until it's done.

because it's much, much quicker.

you keep it in the cabinet and put it back when you're done. just like a pot.

smh Americans

or i could just put a pot on the stove instead of having something ultimately useless cluttering up my kitchen

A benefit of the stovetop kettle is always keeping water in it so that when you're done with the burner, you place the kettle on it so just in case you forgot to turn off the burner, you'll know in a little while when the kettle starts screaming.
