My head says yes but my heart says no.

But in all seriousness this is 100% about where you grew up. Where I grew up (Aurora, Colorado) East Asians did tend to hang out together at the schools I went to and Indian people weren't a part of that group. Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese were the 'Asians'.

In the US we have basically swapped out "oriental" for "Asian" and Indians weren't considered "oriental" even when that term was common is what I would guess is the reason. The real reason behind the difference between what "Asian" means comes from the fact that we are lumping like 60% of the world's population together and there are massive ethnic differences between people that live on that continent.

When "Asia" was originally invented as a term for a place it basically meant everything across the Aegean sea to the East of Greece.
