FDR wanted America to enter the war and followed the Bismarck method of "pretend to be a peacemaker while forcing the enemy to attack you through shrewd diplomacy"... America basically left Japan two options: collapse or war.


I don't think this is true because I heard in a speech by WWII historian Victor Davis Hanson that Japan could have just gotten enough oil from taking the European colonies in SE Asia. If the US stayed out of the war while these countries had their homelands invaded, they will stay out if they have their colonies invaded too.
