After WW1 it should have been pretty clear, especially to Germany, just the kind of economic and military powerhouse America was. There were some real intelligent people that completely fucked the pooch when it came to America in WW2 and I've never seen it explained well enough tbh cacturne. For one thing, they were counting on isolationist sentiment (which had been very strong after WW1) continuing to dictate policy.
