I've never understood how so many nations in WW2 totally discounted America and it's ability to shape the war to it's will. After WW1 it should have been pretty clear, especially to Germany, just the kind of economic and military powerhouse America was. There were some real intelligent people that completely fucked the pooch when it came to America in WW2 and I've never seen it explained well enough tbh cacturne.

For one thing, they were counting on isolationist sentiment (which had been very strong after WW1) continuing to dictate policy. For another, Hitler was an idiot and didn't expect England to last long enough that the U.S. would get involved, and for a third, Japan failed to cripple the Pacific Fleet when they had the chance.
