Yeah I mean imagine my outrage when this 80 something year old woman said "thanks love" when I held the door open for her. Such disrespect!


If she's somebody you see on a regular basis, and you let her know that you're not a fan of being called "love"? Yes, it is disrespectful for her to disregard your feelings on the matter and keep doing so. Good intentions don't mean a thing if you ignore how your audience feels about what you're doing.

Irrelevant. Cultural norms like that will give you a baseline to work from, but treating people respectfully entails taking their individual preferences into account.
